The Precision Nottinghamshire Senior League got underway on Saturday. There are a few new sides in the renamed Premier Division this season and the ones that were in action had contrasting fortunes.
Unity have been in existence since 2006 but up until now had only played in exhibition and charity matches. Their first tilt at competitive football didn’t pan out as they would have hoped as they were beaten 4-0 at home by Ruddington Village. The visitors were 1-0 up at the break courtesy of Leigh Sissons. The Villagers took the game out of reach in the second half via a Matt Carver penalty and strikes from Tristan Rhodes and substitute Dave Rimmington. Another new side, Dunkirk AFC, fared better as Lewis Walker scored all four of his team’s goals in a 4-2 win over Cotgrave. Jordan Cumberland got both of the visitors’ replies. Real United have joined from the Central Midlands League and opened their NSL account with a 3-2 win against FC Cavaliers. United would have hoped for a more resounding win after Ryan Bowen, signed from Wollaton in the offseason, and a double from Tim Hopkinson, a new arrival from West Bridgford, had put them three up at the interval. Liam Taylor had other ideas however, as he scored a brace for Cavs in the second half, but ultimately his side were unable to completely close the deficit. Newark Flowserve were the fourth of the division’s new sides to play, having been promoted as runners-up in Division One last term. They faced a baptism of fire as they were hosting last season’s double winners Wollaton but acquitted themselves well to secure a 1-1 draw. Ben Lyons was on target for Flowserve, Jay Smedley for Wollaton. Burton Joyce were another side to take a three goal lead as they overcame Bingham Town 3-1. Sam Buckle, Ryan Clements and Marc Buckle had put the hosts ahead before Tom Spencer pulled one back from the spot. Spencer had an opportunity to halve the deficit with a second penalty after 80 minutes but could only find the keeper’s legs with his effort. Awsworth Villa won by the odd goal in five in a see-saw game against Bilborough Town. Ben Greenhalgh put the hosts ahead before Ricky Cross levelled matters. Danny Walsh then helped Villa get their noses in front again only for Town debutant Jake Kane to peg them back once more. John Whitehurst then put Awsworth ahead for the final time and they held out for the win. In Division One, John Greaves scored twice for Bilborough United, newly promoted from Division Two, as they won 5-2 away at Clifton All Whites Reserves. Robert England, Marcus Newman and Ismael Bartley were also on target for United; Scott Bell and Justin Pinnock got Clifton’s replies. Radcliffe Olympic Reserves overcame Nottinghamshire 4-3 with goals from Edward Davies, Ryan Parnell and Jawanza Grant (2). Simon Betts, Mark Greensmith and Henry Hylton’s efforts were ultimately in vain for Notts. Darren Turner, Sam Rothwell and Damien Humphreys netted for Ruddington Village Reserves in their 3-2 win over Hucknall Rolls Leisure Reserves. Ash Marshall and Reece Jackson replied for Rolls. Kirton Brickworks and Kimberley Miners Welfare Reserves opened their season with a 0-0 draw. In Division Two, Watnall Athletic, who came close to folding in the offseason, rebounded to record a 5-0 win over Bilborough United Reserves with five different players getting on the scoresheet. Kyle Nutt scored twice in Bulwell Reserves' 3-0 win away at Bilborough Town Reserves. John Crawley also netted twice as Keyworth United Reserves defeated Selston Reserves 3-2. Awsworth Villa Reserves began life in the second division, following relegation, with a 7-5 victory over AFC Clifton. Kimberley Miners Welfare AFC were 2-1 winners at Bingham Town Reserves.
