Wollaton capped off a fine season by winning the Precision NSL Senior Cup Final on Tuesday evening as they defeated West Bridgford 1-0.
It was always going to be a close fought encounter as the two sides finished first and second in the NSL Senior Division. Wollaton were looking to secure the league and cup double for the first time since 2005 whereas West Bridgford were hoping to land their first major silverware in their four year history. Bridgford had the better of the opening 20 minutes but never really turned their possession into any clear cut chances. Wollaton started to come back into the tie and on 23 minutes a firmly struck cross from the left found the head of Ryan Bowen to put the league winners ahead. The game was an even affair from then on and was played with a competitive yet sporting spirit. West Bridgford came close to getting an equaliser 22 minutes into the second half when a cross from the right found Tim Hopkinson inside the six-yard box but he contrived to strike the crossbar. In the latter stages of the match Bridgford pushed centre half and man of the match, Liam Motson, up front to try and find an equaliser. This left room at the back which was nearly punished by Wollaton substitute Marcus Johnson but he showed too much of the ball to the advancing Bridgford keeper Sam Clark. Resolute defending has been a feature of Wollaton’s performances in the Senior Cup this season, as they have not conceded a single goal during the entire tournament, and they held out to take the trophy.
