Nottinghamshire Senior League referee Simon Kells, along with colleagues Ibrahim Arsali, Kenwyn Hughes and Alistair Nelson, recently officiated at Europe's largest youth football tournament, the IberCup, overseen by assessors Robin Bourne and the NSL's very own Darrell Parkes. Simon learned a lot in a short space of time from his experience, as he explains "My goal was to go out and experience different types of games and challenges that we don’t get back here at home and, in so doing, be able to work with neutrals which, given my level, was important for me. The constant coaching received from Darrell and Robin throughout the week has developed me as a referee. This was evident in my second middle as I was already able to put the technical skills into my game I had learnt from my first game, and also by watching Ken’s, Alistair’s and Ibby’s games that I had not even come close to doing in my first match. I feel like I have been able to cram six months' training into one week and can’t wait to now use these skills back home. The experience was also topped off by being able to walk out in front of a big crowd in the final and receiving that ‘buzz’ all us referees love!"
